August 27

Ok, so my kids weren’t interested in much today. I think we over-did it in Singapore!

A leisurely late wakeup for Emily meant the day was off to a good start. Saturday morning should never start too early! We had the usual breakfast and then headed down to Causeway Bay because Stephanie had to find/buy a hairband or two.

Along the way to the hairband type shops, we also stopped in and had Emily’s eyes checked out. Every now and again she complains that her vision is a bit blurry and we can’t decide if it’s because she’s tired or what. She’s had her eyes checked at home too, but we figured since they do it free here, we’d check again. Everything looks fine, though according to the doctor.

Danny had been wanting to get himself a nice pair of sunglasses, and since I’m not one for being left out of the action, I looked too. He found a pair he really liked and got them, and I picked out a very trendy pair of Agnes B glasses for myself. Happy parents make for happier kids! That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.

We found an alley-way with plenty of hair accessory shops and were successful in getting hairbands…..four of them. Two each for the girls. The kids were a bit pissed at me partway down the alley, because I kept saying “nope, too expensive”, to the vendors at their asking prices. Finally, as we neared the end of the alley, I got all four of the hairbands, for the asking price of one at the first shop!!! Yeah, I fought that hard over about $5 Cdn. Hee hee.

We headed back to the hotel only to find out the real reason Stephy wanted hairbands!!!! She wanted to “create” a headpiece so she and Emily could play “drive thru window” together. Yup, using their iPads as a keyboard/cash register, and their hairbands fashioned with a “mouthpieces” like a microphone a superstar might wear, the pretty little hairbands were put to good use. Only Stephanie eh?

The afternoon was spent with all four of us enjoying the sunshine and swimming pool.

Unfortunately, Danny had the brilliant idea to host a huge family dinner tonight, so we all headed to a banquet hall. I knew we were in for trouble, these meals always go badly for me and the kids, and I wasn’t wrong.

First, everybody wants to touch and talk AT my kids. They hate it. Seriously, people, leave them alone. Nobody likes being shouted at by old people in a foreign language. IT”S NOT FUN.

Mostly the kids sat and played matching game with the mahjong tiles that every good banquet hall provides.

The food was apparently very nice, just totally not what the kids and I wanted to eat. Lots of fish (which I don’t eat) and dishes with MSG-laden sauces (which my intestines don’t like). So I paid tons of money for a fancy meal that I mostly didn’t eat. The good thing was that Emily and Stephanie were able to sit with Queenie and Cindy (their cousins who speak English) and so they actually thoroughly enjoyed mealtime.

There was cake to celebrate Emily’s upcoming birthday, which was super-kind of Pok Hei and his family to arrange! Thanks guys!

Just in case you think it was done normally, cake was served and eaten, BEFORE dinner! Gotcha!
