August 21

Today we get to explore Singapore. We booked three nights in the city, and then will switch over to Sentosa Island resort area for the other three nights, before returning to Hong Kong.

We wanted to see the Singapore Flyer. It’s a spectacular way to view the city and today it is sunny and clear. It’s walking distance from our hotel, so off we went. The weather is very hot, about 37 degrees but today is not humid, so it’s ok for walking. We had a great time riding around the Flyer. It’s about a 30minute ride to complete one cycle.

After the views of the Flyer, we paid for tickets for a “hop on hop off” bus tour of the city. We went to see the Merlion statue and fountain, one of the most famous spots in Singapore. The kids needed something cool by then, so Stephy chose a mango/lychee popsicle and Emily had a mango smoothie. The other nice feature was a clean washroom, so that was a bonus.

Back on the tour bus, and we hopped off at Chinatown. We walked around, then needed to find some lunch. They have this massive complex, called Chinatown Complex (tricky eh?). It has hundreds of little stalls selling all kinds of stuff (junk) and then upstairs are hundreds of individual food stalls, selling everything you can imagine. Singapore is a neat place for food, with Chinese, Malaysian, Indian, and pretty much anything else you can think of. We went to a stall selling satay meat sticks for $0.40 each. I bought 10 of them for us, along with a cool little rice packet, wrapped in woven leaves of some kind. The kids didn’t like the rice, but they loved the meat sticks and ate them all.

Back towards the bus we walked, and hopped back on board. We rode around, seeing the Botanic Gardens, Orchard Road shopping district (wow!), and some of Singapore’s most expensive real estate. By the time we got back to our hotel it was 4:30, and the kids wanted to swim.

We spent the next hour and half enjoying the gorgeous pool here at the Pan Pacific. The service really is extraordinary. On arrival in the pool area, they hand you a big towel, and a bottle of icy cold water each. There are lollipops for the kids and lovely fresh apples around for anyone to enjoy. The pool is beautiful, and of course my kids were making friends within minutes of arriving. They swam and enjoyed themselves (as you can see by the underwater photos), and I did too.

All that was left for us today was to find some dinner. We went back over to the huge shopping complex, and ended up at a hotpot place. It was a bit different than what we’re used to in that each person (including kids??) has their own soup pot. The food wasn’t anything special, and it was expensive, but at least we had dinner. Emily had a major meltdown, missing daddy, during dinner, so it wasn’t a success really. On the walk back to the hotel, I bought some muffins at Muji, just in case they were still hungry.

Emily called and talked to daddy as soon as we got back, and was feeling a bit better, so she ate two of the muffins I’d bought. Not to be outdone, Stephy ate one before bed too. We got to watch a bit of a laser light show from our balcony and then called it a night.

Weather, and energy permitting, we’re hoping to go to the Night Safari adventure at Singapore zoo tomorrow night.
